Light Tower Deconstruction - Kiwi Rail
May 2024
Southern Demolition & Salvage were engaged by Hebbs Construction to safely deconstruct an ageing light tower located within an operational railway corridor. The project presented a number of unique challenges, including the structure’s significant height, restricted working area, limited site access, and its close proximity to live railway infrastructure. These factors required detailed planning, comprehensive risk assessments, and close collaboration with the client and railway stakeholders to ensure the work could be completed safely and efficiently without impacting ongoing rail operations.
Following an extensive engineering review, a precision “cut and crane” methodology was selected as the safest and most effective approach for dismantling the structure. This technique enabled the tower to be systematically segmented into carefully calculated sections while maintaining complete control over the stability of the remaining structure throughout the demolition process.
Our experienced demolition team worked closely with crane operators and rigging specialists to execute each lift with precision. Every section of the tower was securely rigged before being cut free and lifted to the ground under controlled conditions. This approach eliminated the risk of uncontrolled collapse, protected surrounding infrastructure, and ensured the safety of personnel working both on the structure and within the surrounding operational environment.
Given the location within a live railway corridor, all activities were meticulously coordinated with railway operations and completed within approved work windows. Detailed lift plans, exclusion zones, and communication protocols were implemented to maintain the highest safety standards while minimising disruption to rail services and adjacent site activities. Throughout the project, strict compliance with all rail safety requirements and industry best practices remained a priority.
Once safely lowered, each section of the tower was processed for transport and recycling. Recoverable steel and other materials were separated and diverted from landfill wherever possible, supporting Southern Demolition & Salvage’s commitment to sustainable demolition practices and responsible resource recovery.
This project demonstrates Southern Demolition & Salvage’s capability to successfully deliver complex structural deconstruction works within high-risk industrial environments. By combining detailed engineering, specialist lifting techniques, experienced personnel, and an uncompromising focus on safety, we were able to complete the project efficiently, protect critical infrastructure, and achieve an outstanding outcome for our client.
